Nutmeg - Spice on the cheap

Nutmeg.....

We all have a random jar of this spice in the back of our cabinet.  Most likely, we paid the ridiculous price of $5.99 at the grocery store at least three years ago.  Now, I love "Old Spice" in its deodorant form but not in my food.

Good news, Nutmeg kernels can be purchased at your local Whole Foods for about $.13.  Fresh will taste better, last longer and will save you a few bucks.  Use a microplane for grating into your favorite holiday recipe. A tip from one of my favorite blogs, My First Kitchen  says to store fresh nutmegs, as well as ground nutmeg, in a tightly-sealed jar or container in a cool, dark place. Wrap leftover fresh nutmeg tightly so the oils are not lost. The smell is fabulous and authentic and CHEAP-er then buying the whole bottle.

Fun Fact: Apparently you can get crazy high ( not the fun "I see Smurfs" kind of high, more like the vomit and dizzy kind).  If are wanting a cheap ugly high, then I suppose $5.99 isn't bad.  However, a wise person once told me, "if its brown and its not a mushroom, skip it and wait for someone to offer you something green".

I'm just saying.
